Joy of Wildlife

Our Wednesday outings are for anyone who is interested in wildlife to come along
and contribute to the biological records for Shropshire. You do not need to possess
any ability to identify the wildlife, just a willingness to try to spot things of interest and
enjoy the camaraderie of the group. Members of the group are more than happy to
try and identify what you find and help to develop your own skills. The outings usually
last about 5 hours. We take a picnic lunch and occasionally end up in a local hostelry
after a ‘hard’ day.

Middle Marches Community Land Trust

We work with landowners helping them to identify existing and potential wildlife sites and manage them sustainably. We support local food production by promoting local growers, caring for land, conserving and enhancing soil and ensuring the welfare of livestock. We work with existing organisations and individuals to improve the connections in the landscape through sympathetic management and habitat recreation and act as an advice hub – sharing advice, skills and education, often through visits and workshops. We can also help with acquiring and managing land of current or potential high wildlife value for conservation purposes.

County Recorders

Do you need to report a sighting or contact a wildlife and species recording group?

It is important to record sightings of species with the date and location of the observation. These data are very important for mapping the extent of a species and tracking changes through time.. There are a series of county recorders throughout the UK, and it is really important that YOUR records are sent to the relevant  County Recorder.

Because of data protection requirements and because the names and e-mail addresses of county recorders change from time to time, it is not appropriate to list them here. However, you can usually find them by contacting the group or organisation which officially supports the recorders.

Here are some of those groups:

Shropshire Botanical Society

Shropshire Section of the Bryology Society

Shropshire Fungus Society

Shropshire Mammal Group

Shropshire Ornithological Society

Shropshire and Staffordshire Amphibian and Reptile Group

Shropshire Dragonflies

Finally, check out the Shropshire Ecological Data Network (SEDN) list of wildlife and species recording groups. Please note that some entries for recorders on this list may be out of date. In addition the email links do not work. Please contact the actual group through their website to find the names and addresses of the relevant recorder.
